Consultation and Workshop FAQs

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about Consultations and Workshops. If there’s anything not answered below, please email southlondonslings@hotmail.co.uk or call Emily on 07793823539 to have a chat.

Do I need a private Consultation or Workshop?

You could benefit from a specially planned and dedicated session if:

  • You’d like to try out different carriers and to get advice on what would be best for you in your own time and in a more relaxed setting than the Library Open Session. You’ll get my full attention and won’t have to hang around waiting to be helped.
  • You’d like to learn how to use a new carrier or to learn new carries with your current carrier/s (e.g. if you’re ready to move on to back carries, but would like some help) and have the chance to try them out and practice without being rushed.
  • You have a specific or special need related to using carriers or slings that you’d like time to discuss in detail with us to help find you a solution.
  • You’d like help troubleshooting carriers that you own to ensure that they are suitable and that you’re able to make the most out of them.
  • You’re a group of friends with babies at the same age/stage who’d like a workshop in suitable carriers/carries for them.

Are you qualified and insured?

In February 2012 I completed a Certificate in Babywearing (OCN Level 3 accredited) with the School of Babywearing to qualify me as a Babywearing Consultant. I also have a current certificate in Paediatric First Aid, and as part of my degree studies in Psychology have passed Open University courses in Child Development and Understanding Children in the Early Years.  For more details about my experience and qualifications, see this page: About Me.

I have both public liability and professional indemnity insurance so am fully insured to run Consultations and Workshops in my home or other venues as well as to lend carriers and slings through the Sling Library.

What happens during a Consultation or Workshop?

Before you come along I’ll ask you to fill in a questionnaire and we’ll chat about your needs and what you’d most like to get out of the session.  During the session I’ll cover sling safety and positioning, plus whatever you need – whether that’s the features, pros and cons of suitable options, how to use a specific carrier or carriers, or how to do a new carry safely and correctly. We’ll practice carries using a weighted doll and with your own child and take as much time as you need to feel confident. I try to cover as much as possible without rushing – I want to make the best use of your time, but not to overload you with information that you won’t take in.  After a session I’ll provide support by email and phone if you’ve got any follow up questions and to send links to online tutorials or further reading.

Where are Consultations and Workshops held?

Most Consultations and small group Workshops are held in my home at 34 York Hill, London, SE27 0AD. More details about how to get here and some things to consider are on the following page: More About Open Sessions.

I’m also able to travel to you to give a consultation in your home or venue. Do be aware that I won’t be able to bring all of the carriers, slings and equipment with me and so will have a reduced selection to work with when not at my own home. I charge extra for Consultations outside my home; home visits cost from £10 (on top of normal consultation fees) depending on your location and the time taken to travel to you.

Is there free parking?

For single-family Consultations only there is one parking space available for you to use on the drive outside my house. Otherwise please be considerate and use other local free parking places suggested on the page about Open Sessions linked above to ensure that anyone else arriving with a buggy is able to get to the front door!

How much do Consultations and Workshops cost?

Pricess depend on the number and needs of the people attending.  A standard private session or group Workshop lasts for 1.5 – 2 hours to allow time for needing to change and feed babies mid-session. Shorter sessions are available for those with very specific individual needs, or who are returning for a follow up session.  For a full quote, please email southlondonslings@hotmail.co.uk.

Consultations and Workshops are timed and priced according to the needs of the people attending. Here’s a rough guide for pricing.

Private Consultation for one family for up to 2 hours: £40
Small group session for 2-6 families for up to 2 hours: £5-15 per adult + £5 per child depending on numbers

1 hour focussed or followup Consultation for one family: £25
1 hour workshop to cover one carrying skill for up to 6 people: from £5 per adult depending on numbers.

Can I bring other people along?

Consultations and Workshops to work best if you only bring the adults and children who are going to carry/be carried. For private sessions that you’re attenting as the only adult, you’re welcome to bring a family member or friend for support if you’d like. Though you’re welcome to bring along older children, they can be distracting and so you may find you get more out of the session if you’re able to leave them with someone for the duration of the session.

If you’ve got any other questions please just email southlondonslings@hotmail.co.uk and I’ll do my best to help!
